Meanings of Popular Christmas

Have you ever opened one tiny little door a day on an advent calendar leading up to Christmas? An advent calendar; a fun way to count the days towards Christmas which began in Germany during the 19th century. The very first advent calendars were produced from printed card and behind each of the little doors was an image. In many modern variations of the Advent calendar, it might come filled with anything from chocolate to toys or even beauty products. They make waiting for Christmas all the more fun and entertaining. 

Okay, but what about the poinsettia plant? Have you ever seen these beauties around the holidays? Poinsettias are typically red and green, making the festive-colored plant a holiday favorite. These pretty plants are actually native to Mexico and were first shipped over the United States 1800s. They were named after an ambassador to Mexico, by the name of Joel Poinsett. The poinsettia's bright red and green colors make it a popular winter holiday plant, as well. Some people think the leaves resemble star shapes (similar to those that guided the Wise Men).  

Last but not least, the candy cane. Many people eat this candy shaped like a cane at Christmas. The candy cane: originally just made as a decoration. Back in 1670, a choir director in Germany wanted to pacify the children at his Church as well since it was going to be an incredibly long Christmas service. He handed out sugar sticks molded like shepherds' crooks to keep the kids occupied. It was a clever idea. The candy cane was brought to America in the early 1900s, but it wasn't until then that someone added stripes of red and white.
